Concussions in Athletes Idaho is a safer place for contact sports athletes. On March 29, 2010, before adjourning for this session, the Idaho Legislature passed Idaho’s concussion bill, H676. Our state leaders learned what only a few parents or even coaches know: Mistreated and untreated concussions are hindering the brain power of our student athletes. Idaho’s concussion bill, working through the State Board of Education, provides information for our coaches, parents and athletes on the signs and symptoms of concussion. What is a concussion? How do they happen? How do we know if our athletes have received a concussion? These are all important questions that parents, coaches, and teachers need to ask. In the past, a concussion may have been downgraded to a “ding” and the athlete told to shake it off and get back in the game. With increased knowledge of these injuries, the potential for significant life-altering ramifications of Post Concussion Syndrome and Second Impact Syndrome, concussions cannot be taken lightly. It’s imperative that any person involved in the oversight of an athlete have an understanding of concussion, the signs and symptoms, treatment guidelines and appropriate medical intervention. There are great resources available both locally and nationally. Below are printable flyers that deal with concussion signs and symptoms, as well as helmet fitting guidelines.
